A series of talks sponsored by the Brooklin Food Corps on Saturdays, October 3rd, 10th, and 17th at 2 PM.

How does the seafood we enjoy get to our table? Most of us don’t know much, if anything, about how it moves from our local waters and shores to the grocery stores’ and fish purveyors’ refrigerated cases. This series of talks will unpack the process of harvesting food from the sea.

Our three speakers are local residents whose work has attracted national attention: David Tarr, scalloper, lobsterman, and policy advisor, October 3rd; Abby Barrows (Deer Isle Oyster Co.), oyster farmer and marine scientist, October 10th; and Micah Woodcock (Atlantic Holdfast Seaweed Co.), seaweed harvester and policy advisor, October 17th.

Each will share their unique perspective: What are the fishing and harvesting seasons? How do weather, environmental concerns, and other considerations affect the ability to catch or harvest? What are the distribution channels? What makes our area unique? How will this work change in the future? Come and connect with those doing the work and learn about how they do it, the challenges, the rewards, and the ways this hyper-local work links to broader issues. Free and open to all.
